Has anyone seen Maa Sita in person? I’ve read and watched mythology my whole life. I even remember some of the dialogues from the OG Ramayana serial of 1987 by Ramanand Sagar, but never did I know that instead of looking at her character, simplicity, and calmness, I had to look at her fairness. Weren’t we supposed to learn from it?

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, is set to release on November 5, 2026, and the buzz around the film has been building for the past year. The day the first trailer of the movie was released, fans were quick to question the casting, and the biggest talking points were the lead roles of Ranbir Kapoor as Rama and Sai Pallavi as Sita. Everyone has watched Ramayana, so they have their own interpretations which they are sharing on social media platforms. Some are sharing critical opinions, but what some others are doing to Sai Pallavi is no less than a personal attack.

If maa sita represents grace, calmness, strength, and dignity why are we reducing her portrayal to just facial features and skin colour.

What Does Maa Sita Look Like?

Sita was the daughter of the Earth. She was the human form of Goddess Lakshmi and was said to be the most beautiful woman, with black hair, pearl-like teeth, eyes like a deer, and a golden-hued complexion. That’s how the Valmiki Ramayana describes Sita. But you know what else the Valmiki Ramayana describes? Rama, who is tall, powerful, built like a warrior, and has a dark brown complexion, along with a calm and virtuous character.

Now, why is it always a woman who is weighed against the descriptions in the books? While Ranbir Kapoor did face criticism, it was not because of his complexion. Sai Pallavi, however, is facing criticism for her complexion, facial hair, features, wavy hair, and accent.

Gods are supposed to be different from us, and no actor can actually be a god in a way that satisfies every member of the audience. If maa sita represents grace, calmness, strength, and dignity why are we reducing her portrayal to just facial features and skin colour.

Why Are Indians So Obsessed with Fair Complexion?

Earlier, she was praised for her acting range and versatility, but now the question remains: why can’t the so-called netizens wait and watch her performance as an actor?

Indians have long been obsessed with fair skin, and hence, the Maa Sita they wanted was someone with the fairest skin and big eyes. Sai Pallavi has cultivated an image of a spiritual person over the years. However, people no longer seem interested in that image; instead, the focus is on her appearance. We have seen Pllavi’s performance in movies such as Premam, Shyam Singha Roy and Amaran.

Earlier, she was praised for her acting range and versatility, but now the question remains: why can’t the so-called netizens wait and watch her performance as an actor on screen before slamming her for not looking model-like enough?

They are comparing her to Rakul Preet, who plays Surpanakha, Ravana’s sister, and now Kajol, who plays Mandodari, Ravana’s wife. A meme is also circulating on social media platforms, with users sharing an image of Kajol captioned, “The wife Ravan has at home,” alongside an image of Sai Pallavi captioned, “The lady he is supposed to kidnap.”

Now, with all the criticism, attacks, and unsolicited opinions, the question remains: Real Sita or reel Sita? When will this Agni Pariksha end?
